Measure a coffee corner before choosing the machine

Separate the appliance outline from the space needed to fill, prepare, clean and follow the installation instructions.

Copy dimensions with their order

A width, depth and height only become useful when you know which number belongs to which direction. Copy the order from the manufacturer rather than assuming a retailer uses the same sequence. As a model-specific example, Sage's UK Barista Express page lists 31.8 cm wide, 35.1 cm deep and 40.4 cm high. These describe the appliance outline; they are not recommended gaps around it.

Draw that rectangle on paper and compare it with your actual worktop. Include any fixed obstruction such as a wall return, shelf bracket or projecting handle. Measure the usable area rather than the full span of a kitchen unit. Keep uncertain dimensions as questions instead of rounding them in the direction that makes the machine fit.

Leave the operating instructions in charge

A geometrical fit does not approve a location. The Sage BES875/SES875 manual says not to operate the machine in an enclosed space or cupboard. Check the exact instructions for the model you intend to buy, including the surface, surrounding environment and access requirements. A photograph of an attractive coffee corner cannot replace those conditions.

Treat any subtraction on your plan as a difference in outline measurements only. For example, a hypothetical 60 cm worktop width minus the stated 31.8 cm appliance width leaves 28.2 cm. That remaining strip is not a manufacturer-approved clearance, nor does it prove that other equipment can safely occupy the space.

Draw the preparation movements

Mark where you would put the portafilter down, where the cup waits and how you reach the controls. Include the movement of any handle or removable tray rather than drawing only the body of the appliance. If the model has a water tank that lifts or slides out, confirm its route in the instructions or with the manufacturer. Do the same for filling the bean hopper.

You can rehearse the workflow using paper outlines on a clear, unpowered work surface. The point is to find awkward reaches before buying equipment. It is not a substitute for checking the appliance in its final approved location, and it should not involve operating a machine in a temporary or unsuitable arrangement.

Count the separate grinder as a separate object

A separate grinder introduces another outline and another routine. Sage's UK Smart Grinder Pro page lists 21.5 cm wide, 16 cm deep and 38.9 cm high. In a simple side-by-side width calculation, 31.8 cm plus 21.5 cm is 53.3 cm before any spacing, access or other requirements. A hypothetical 60 cm width would then leave only 6.7 cm of unallocated outline space.

Do not read that remainder as an endorsement of the arrangement. Different models may have different directions of access, cables or operating conditions. The historical grinder photograph simply makes the separate object visible; it is not the Sage model used for this dimensional example.

Save a plan that includes the unanswered questions

Your final note should contain the measured worktop area, each appliance's ordered dimensions, the relevant manual and a list of access questions. Add the locations of cups, accessories and the normal cleaning route. Keep the date and product version alongside the plan because a similarly named replacement can have different dimensions. If a retailer and manufacturer disagree, resolve the discrepancy before ordering.

The best choice is not necessarily the smallest body. It is equipment that can be used and maintained in the space you actually have, under its own instructions. A clear plan helps you reject an awkward option early and explains why a seemingly generous countertop can still be unsuitable for a particular daily routine.
